For instance, in the development of electrical motors for cars or the design of the very latest wireless chips for cell phones. Electrical Engineering is crucial in almost every modern technology: from reading information on a DVD to signal processing in medical equipment. At TU/e, for instance, we focus on wireless energy transfer. What does that mean for the future? Suppose the battery of your cell phone or tablet is always fully charged, then you won’t need a separate charger. And you can use your TV anywhere because you won’t have to plug it in! Working on the future Electrical Engineering is working on the future and this is evident in the field’s applications. This is why the study is geared to three societal themes that you become familiar with in the first year: Communication (The Connected World): such as a chip that works using light rather than electric signals, Bluetooth or WiFi Healthcare (Care and Cure): medical applications such as an MRI scanner or treating cancer cells using electromagnetic waves Environment (Smart and Sustainable Society): finite resources like oil and gas will eventually become exhausted. The joint bachelor program Data Science, in cooperation with Tilburg University, has been approved by the NVAO! That means it is now possible to subscribe for this study that will start in September 2016, subscribing is possible until August 1st. Prospective students that live in the Netherlands can subscribe via Studielink, all others via our website or the Tilburg University website. It is possible to subscribe via the Eindhoven University of Technology or via Tilburg University. There is one different course, Applied physical sciences at TU/e and Foundations of computing at Tilburg University. The rest of the program is exactly the same. When subscribing to data science at one university, you will automatically be registered at the other university and thus will allow you to choose electives from both universities. What is Applied Mathematics? Applied mathematics is a specific form of mathematics. It involves applying mathematical models in order to map out the mathematical core of a practical problem. With applied mathematics, you can solve problems that at first may not even appear to be mathematical in nature. This might be, for example, a practical problem that exists in industry or in (governmental) institutions. As a mathematical problem sometimes requires the investigation and researching of mathematics at a more fundamental level, you may well have to undertake in-depth study as an applied mathematician. And as you often collaborate with specialists from other fields, you will also need the ability to look beyond your own specialization. That is what makes applied mathematics so fascinating. Mathematical model Applied mathematicians produce a model of a problem and then use that model to carry out calculations in order to arrive at a solution. Solving a problem using a mathematical model involves 3 elements: Modeling: you produce a mathematical model for a practical problem. To do this, you need knowledge of mathematics and of the field from which the problem arises. It is therefore often the case that you as the mathematician work together with a specialist from the field in which the problem arises. Solving: if the mathematical problem is simple, the field specialist will solve the problem alone. If it is more complex, you as an applied mathematician work together with the field specialist. Retranslation of the solution to the original problem: you convert the solution of the mathematical problem according to the practical problem, so that specialists from the other field are able to use it.
